ZuraPrep™ is a novel preoperative surgical skin preparation that was developed from the ZuragenTM therapeutic platform. The design objective was to develop a highly effective and safe surgical scrub that meets and / or exceeds the new FDA TFM Requirements for this product category. In addition to providing excellent efficacy, ZuraPrep™ may also significantly reduce product application times when compared to currently approved products.
With an estimated 27 to 32 million surgical procedures annually in the United States, the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs) has risen dramatically. According to the CDC, approximately 500,000 SSIs occur each year which add an average of 7.3 post-operative hospital days and associated yearly costs of nearly $1.5 billion.
Dr. Ash initially developed Zuragen™ Injection as an antimicrobial / antithrombotic catheter therapy to significantly reduce the incidence of catheter related bloodsteam infection. ZuraPrep™ uses the core elements of Zuragen™ Injection.
Human “pilot” trials evaluating the efficacy, safety and dosing applications of ZuraPrep™ have been conducted by BioScience Laboratories in approximately 40 patients. The company is working to submit an IND in the coming months.
